NDS announces OCAP version of Mediahighway Development Kit Advanced
  • First and only tool in the market to simulate complete interactive
          TV chain
  • First and only to simulate behavior of an OCAP set-top box
  • All applications can be developed and viewed on single PC
  • San Francisco (NCTA - CableNet Booth #6490) April 5, 2005 - NDS, a News Corporation company and leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, today announced the immediate availability of a new OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP) version of its widely popular MediaHighway Development Kit (MHDK) Advanced. MHDK Advanced is the first and only development tool in the market to simulate the complete interactive TV chain, enabling developers to create, edit, test and debug interactive TV Javatm applications for MediaHighway Advanced set-top boxes and digital TVs on a single PC. With this new version, MHDK Advanced can simulate for developers the behavior of a MediaHighway Advanced OCAP set-top box.

The MediaHighway Advanced authoring tool allows for development and customization of applications to be deployed on Java-based digital TV interactive platforms. Using this new version, developers can now address an even wider variety of iTV environments, enabling the development of any kind of OCAP application, whether its resident, downloadable or a monitor application.

"We have already begun testing the new MHDK authoring tool and it is even more powerful and flexible than we hoped it would be," said Dominic Laval, Chief Operating Officer, emuse technologies. "At emuse, it is important that we have the right environment to develop compelling OCAP-compliant iTV applications for the U.S. market. The MHDK Advanced tool kit provides us with that creative environment."

An extremely high-performance tool, MHDK Advanced sharply reduces equipment costs and accelerates development time, leading to faster time-to-market implementations of innovative iTV applications. Features of the tool include:

  • Attractive GUI design tool with a built-in Javatm source code generator
  • Code editor for extending and customizing the source code
  • End to end simulator for running and testing the application
  • NTSC operation with configurable screen resolution
  • In Band and Out Of Band network simulation
  • Comprehensive debugger for tracing and analyzing the code
  • Operations for uploading applications to a STB with monitoring MHDK Advanced is delivered, and includes plug-ins for many of the most popular Integrated Development Environments (IDE) such as SUN One Studio/NetBeans and Borland JBuilder.

"MHDK Advanced is already backed by a wide community of users," said Frederic Laporte, Director Marketing & Business Development MediaHighway, NDS. "Building on the confidence that the developer community already has in the maturity and stability of the MediaHighway development toolkit, this new version further expands the possibilities for developers, making it even easier for them to efficiently develop OCAP-compliant applications for the US digital television environment."
